I turned 65 in November. I was warned that if I was going to change physicians, to be sure and do so before I turned 65. Sure enough, when I phoned the offices of a few internists I was interested in having as my doctor I was asked if I was a medicare age. If I was not they would take me on as a new patient but if I was already a medicare patient I was told they were not taking on new medicare patients. Interestingly and luckily for me, they were willing to take me on as a new patient even though I was going to be a medicare patient soon and they would keep me on as a patient after I turned 65. Those are the realities of access to physician care for medicare patients today; I would guess there will be less access to care if the 20% cuts that are being proposed go into effect.
